Georgia has made significant contributions to the music industry with some of the greatest Country, Rock, R&B and HipHop artists the world has ever known. On June 16, 2012 at the Buckhead Theatre, Georgia will honor its artists and highlight the next generation of music to come out of Georgia. The First Annual GA Music Awards will celebrate every genre of music, spotlighting the development of the music industry in Georgia to encourage growth in the music’s presence and future.
Highlights of the evening will include The Braxtons, including award winning singer Toni Braxton, of whom will present an award. The Braxtons are currently working together on a WETV reality show, “˜Braxton Family Values,’ in addition to other ventures. The show features the day-to-day lives of the Braxtons, including star Toni Braxton, her sisters Towanda, Trina, Tamar, and Traci, and their mother, Evelyn. Toni Braxton is a leader in the music industry, having won several Grammy Awards, American Music Awards, and American Billboard Awards, although the entire family has experienced success.
The evenings’ honorees will include Georgia greats, The Dungeon Family and Mr. Collipark among many others. The Dungeon Family is a creative mix of hiphop, R&B and Soulful music called Southern HipHop. The group gets its name from “The Dungeon”, a name given to record producer Rico Wade’s basement studio where the members first recorded many of their hits. Rico Wade, Ray Murray, and Sleepy Brown make up the songwriting and production team known as Organized Noize. The main members of the Dungeon Family include members from the groups OutKast and Goodie Mob. Michael Crooms, aka Mr. Collipark, aka DJ Smurf, is the super producer and owner of the Atlanta-based record label, Collipark Records. The name “Collipark” was derived from the city of College Park in Georgia where Crooms grew up. He is credited as playing a major role in the careers of the Ying Yang Twins, Soulja Boy, Hurricaine Chris, V.I.C. and many more. In 2007, Mr. Collipark won BMI’s “Songwriter of the Year” award and was also nominated for a 2008 Grammy for his work with Soulja Boy.
And let’s not forget an evening full of music nominees like singer/songwriter, Tocarra Hamilton. Her resume is extensive. With all that she has accomplished, it’s hard to believe, she’s an independent artist. She is best known for her features with Usher on “Daddy’s Home”, and Raz B and Pitbull’s “Dance With Me”. Tocarra is an outstanding writer and has received recognition for her writing abilities by ASCAP (ASCAP Writers Session Live). She has toured the US, opening up for national acts like Jazmine Sullivan, Wale and Nicki Minaj and gracing stages like the Bronner Bros Hair Show. She was the 3rd place contender for the Budweiser Superfest Talent Competition held nationally. Tocarra was also recently recognized in the Who’s Who of Atlanta in Entertainment as the independent artist and young entrepreneur on the rise. Her music will be heard on the upcoming “Love & HipHop Atlanta“. The show’s theme song, “No Love Here” with Rapper, Lil Scrappy was co-written and performed by none other than Tocarra and the song will also be Lil Scrappy‘s single from his upcoming album. The GA Music Awards welcomes Tocarra as a nominee in the Best Female R&B Category and is excited to have her become a part of the organization.
