As thousands of people take to their Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and other social media sites to honor the legendary icon Ruby Dee, RFFocus would like to send our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and fans affected by the loss of this legendary woman.
Ruby Dee died peacefully Wednesday at her New Rochelle, New York, home, according to her representative, Michael Livingston. She was 91 years old at the time of her death.
She was an American actress, poet, playwright, screenwriter, journalist and activist. She is perhaps best known for co-starring in the film A Raisin in the Sun and the film American Gangster for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She was the recipient of Grammy, Emmy, Obie, Drama Desk, Screen Actors Guild Award, and Screen Actors Guild Lifetime Achievement Awards as well as the National Medal of Arts and the Kennedy Center Honors. She was married to actor Ossie Davis until his death in 2005. She starred alongside her late husband in many films including Spike Lee’s classic, Do The Right Thing.
Ruby Dee was more than just an artist, she was the light for so many that followed in her footsteps looking to navigate a tough industry and sometimes unfair world. We would just like to say rest in prosperity to Ruby Dee, one of the greatest people and talents to bless the planet.
