ESPN Ends Partnershp with PBS’s FRONTLINE
You may notice some changes to our League of Denial and Concussion Watch websites. From now on, at ESPN’s request, we will no longer use their logos and collaboration credit on these sites and on our upcoming film League of Denial, which investigates the NFL’s response to head injuries among football players.
We don’t normally comment on investigative projects in progress, but we regret ESPN’s decision to end a collaboration that has spanned the last 15 months and is based on the work of ESPN reporters Mark Fainaru-Wada and Steve Fainaru, as well as FRONTLINE’s own original journalism.
Over that time, we’ve enjoyed a productive partnership with ESPN’s investigative program, Outside the Lines, jointly publishing and co-branding several ground-breaking articles on our respective websites and on their broadcast. We’ve been in sync on the goals of our reporting: to present the deepest accounting so far of the league’s handling of questions around the long-term impact of concussions. This editorial partnership was similar to our many other collaborations with news organizations over the years.

Petition Directed at WCLK, 91.9 FM: Let Jamal Ahmad Program the Music on the S.O.U.L. of Jazz –
Again we are witnessing the power of social media. A petition started by Editor/Writer, Carlton Hargro is picking up some steam. The Grammy nominated group The Foreign Exchange has already jumped on board by tweeting the petition out to it’s followers. WCLK-FM (91.9) adjusted the formatting of the majority of its shows starting Monday, August 26th in an effort to save the station, according to assistant general manager Tammy Nobles. The one adjustment that has some people up in arms is Jamal Ahmad’s “S.O.U.L. of Jazz” show being changed. Listeners enjoyed Jamal’s 2-6 pm for it’s soothing sounds of eclectic soul. It has now been replaced with smooth jazz. Hargro makes that case that changing the format of WCLK 91.9 FM plays into the scrutinization and loss of black culture throughout the world.
Hargro’s petition states, “Jamal Ahmad‘s show is one of the last bastion’s on noncommercial music in the city of Atlanta. Jamal opens our minds to sounds from all over the world, educating us about music we may never hear if not for him. His show is one of the foundations of Atlanta‘s jazz and soul scenes, supporting hundreds of artists, musicians and more. Gutting his show — as WCLK‘s recent programming shift to a smooth-jazz-heavy format has done — hurts not only the station’s listeners but the city’s cultural scene as well. In a world where black culture is constantly being scrutinized and maligned, we MUST keep this gem — The S.O.U.L. of Jazz — untouched.”
