St. Louis, Missouri-Radio One Inc., has named Shawneen Thompson as Vice President and General Manager. For the past three years she has held the position of Station Manager.
“I am excited to begin this next phase in my career and to continue to guide the Radio One St. Louis cluster by bridging the gap between the community we serve and the clients we work with on a local and national basis. I look forward to charting a course for our station’s continued success in this ever changing media landscape,” said Thompson.
“Shawneen has led our St. Louis operations to strong performances for a number of years. I am confident her leadership and community involvement will continue to grow our operations,” said Chris Wegmann, Radio One Regional Vice President.
Thompson’s career has spanned over 20 years in radio including a myriad of formats spanning country, classic rock, oldies, sports, adult contemporary and urban . She began her radio career in Columbus, Ohio with CHR, WNCI-FM in 1991. A promotion led her to other Nationwide Communication stations including adult contemporary KDMX-FM in Dallas, Texas and country giant WCOL-FM in Columbus, Ohio. Her experience also included promotions director for the flagship station of the Ohio State Buckeyes, WBNS-AM and Oldies WBNS-FM where she made her introduction to sales. In 1998, Shawneen was introduced to urban radio by Ross Love, then owner of Blue Chip Broadcasting’s WCKX/WXMG and WJYD-FM. Her passion for educating consumers on the value of the African-American consumer led her to Atlanta, GA as account manager for Cox Radio WALR-FM, and eventually moved to CBS Radio as Local Sales Manager and was quickly promoted to GSM of the CBS flagship urban property, WVEE-FM, a position she held from 2005 to 2009.
Her personal mentors, who are among the most leading women in radio, have influenced her to provide leadership and advocate for the advancement of women to senior management positions. Previously, she served as president for the American Women in Radio and Television, Buckeye Chapter. In addition, she was recognized by Who’s Who in Black Atlanta from 2005-2008, Who’s Who in Black St. Louis in 2011, Radio Ink up and coming African Americans in 2013 and is a graduate of the NAB (Broadcast Leadership Training Program).
