No “Most Powerful” list can be complete without including Ms. Cathy Hughes. The first black major corporate radio station owner. I’ll never forget a conversation I had with a friend who stated Hughes tried to tell other black radio people about ownership at a Jack the Rapper conference many years ago and people just couldn’t see it (or didn’t want to). It’s a great thing she stuck with her vision. Hughes’ Radio One, based in Washington, DC, has 53 radio stations in 16 urban markets, with 2012 revenues of $433 million. Her son CEO, Alfred Liggins has expanded Radio One into successful TV and online ventures. TV One has seen phenomenal success with shows like Unsung and R&B Divas (Atlanta and LA).
SVP/Urban Programming: iHeartmedia (formerly Clear Channel) Media
doc wynter is one of the most popular and more respected executives in the radio arena. His varied leadership duties for iHeartmedia (formerly Clear Channel) media were expanded recently with the added title of Brand Manger. These are individuals chosen to serve as iHeartmedia (formerly Clear Channel)’s in-house format experts. Doc tells RFFocus “I’ve been with CC for 25 years….Back in 1990, I remember sitting in the back if the room at a convention admiring the accomplished urban programmers up on the stage…wanting to meet them…wanting them to know that I wanted to be them one day. Years later, most of the accomplished people on the stage that day have worked for me. It’s rare that I do the “Stage” thing these days, but when I do, I find myself wondering who in the room is going to be among the next group of the accomplished ones.”

Jay Stevens is considered an expert on urban and urban AC music. He’s worked as the VP of programming at WPGC in DC for two decades before he segued to Radio One where he is makes the final decisions on what 53 urban radio stations play in 15 markets. Stevens also controls the content in Radio One’s Company magazine the Frequency, a publication for the urban programmers at Radio One. He is from upstate NY.

Rouse is considered the King of radio in Atlanta by many in the radio industry. He programs one of the most powerful stations in the country WVEE (V103) as well as WAOK and he oversees some of CBS Radio’s other properties. The station (V103) is one that many black announcers would drop everything they are doing to work at. Colby is one of the most impressive programmers in the radio arena. He is also an expert at marketing his station and branding with other media. As Cleveland has been in the national news quite a bit lately, Colby makes sure his stations are always on top of the latest developments in the Cleveland community and Colby is always first to get the word out on issues of national interest to other media and social networks. This is virtually unheard of from most urban radio stations.
Colby not only holds several titles, two of his stations, Radio One Cleveland WENZ AND WZAK have recently posted some of the highest ratings in the stations history with a sizable revenue growth as well. Colby is also the programming liaison between Radio One PD’s and Interactive One. He helps work on digital campaigns for all of their stations and their implementation and execution.
