Cathy Hughes

Founder/Owner Radio One Corp

No “Most Powerful” list can be complete without including Ms. Cathy Hughes. The first black major corporate radio station owner. I’ll never forget a conversation I had with a friend who stated Hughes tried to tell other black radio people about ownership at a Jack the Rapper conference many years ago and people just couldn’t see it (or didn’t want to). It’s a great thing she stuck with her vision. Hughes’ Radio One, based in Washington, , has 53 radio stations in 16 urban markets, with 2012 revenues of $433 million. Her son CEO, Alfred Liggins has expanded Radio One into successful TV and online ventures. TV One has seen phenomenal success with shows like Unsung and R&B Divas (Atlanta and LA).
