, founder and chairperson of , Inc., was honored Nov. 16, 2016, with a lifetime leadership achievement award at the Radio Ink Forecast Conference at the Harvard Club in New York City. Hughes’ pioneering achievements in the radio business — as well as the recent dedication of Howard University’s School of Communications in her name last month — were lauded by Dan Mason, former chairman of CBS Radio and the current Chairman of the Broadcasters Foundation of America, who introduced the award at a special luncheon. The presentation also included remarks from her son and business partner, Radio One CEO Alfred Liggins, who noted that working with his mother is a “true partnership.”

Hughes thanks the publishers of the longrunning business magazine, and also acknowledged her relationships with many of the high-level radio executives in attendance. “I can honestly say it was pretty easy to earn the leadership award because all I had to do was follow in the footsteps of many of you in this room who were great leaders for so many years,” she said. “So many of you paved the way and opened the door … you always took our calls, you always told us candidly what was going on in the industry.”

In conclusion, Hughes advised radio’s leaders to continue to mentor and advise the next generation, even if it seemed against their best interests to do so. “It is more important now than ever before for us tp embrace those, particularly millennials, who oftentimes rock the boat and rattle our nerves with new ideas … We have to hold the doors in our industry for those who are coming behind us and continue the tradition of reaching back and giving advice.”
