“URBAN YOUTH ALERT” (an organization to help prevent STDs for Black teens)
OK folks, this is very serious, all jokes aside for this post. I’ve written a couple of stories about STD rates in NY being at an all time high for HIV and Herpes but the truth is there is even, in my eyes, a greater danger lurking in our community that has been ignored for too long. Ignored by the media, black churches, parents and the community as a whole.
STDs are affecting black youth at an alarming rate. Although Blacks represent only 16 percent of U.S. teens, they represented 69 percent of all new AIDS cases and black teens also rank very high with many other STDs like: Gonorrhea, HPV, Herpes, Chlamydia and Syphilis. I find this disheartening . In my research, experts have informed me that…”There is a lack of youth tailored prevention programs that relate to the youth or black culture.” I knew this was the problem from being a magazine publisher and realizing most of the ad agencies, marketing divisions at major companies and major STD organizations either have VERY few Black people working there or the black people that work there are out of touch or playing politics to keep their jobs. To that end, I realized my experience in the industry, radio and my contacts would back up my efforts to get the word out for prevention. I hope I’m not wrong. Currently, I’m working on a tour of Atlanta high schools and of course, fundraising.
