INDUSTRY EXCLUSIVE: What’s Next for Tom Joyner Morning Show?

Over the past several weeks The Tom Joyner Morning Show has seen quite a bit of controversy.  We know many fans of the show want to know what they can expect in the near future and we’re hear to tell you how the industry works and what’s next. Here are some of the things you may or may not know about the show. Let me add, if you went on the last Fantastic Voyage cruise then you know that Tom, Sybil and J are HILARIOUS (when off the air) if it wasn’t for advertisers and being on in mornings on commercial radio the show would be even better. Would Tom consider doing SiriusXM radio show? Time will tell but it’s certainly the path that several other former commercial radio jocks have chosen to get away from all the stipulations and corporate politics.  In an upcoming exclusive interview with RFFocus , Tom Joyner informed us that he has every intention of continuing to do radio.

Tom Joyner has over 8 Million Listeners

That in itself means he has a stronghold on a HUGE African American audience many who whom are very loyal to him and have been listening to the TJMS for 21 years. Please click “Next” above or below to see next segment.

  1. Kevin,

Thank you for the perspective of Tom Joyner’s impact on radio. Yes he is a “classically” trained (from college radio) personality. His activism throughout the years is unparalleled however most of Tom’s support today is from those that are transitioning away from “music” radio, urban radio formats, and listening to news and NPR formats. And the youth today know of radio but don’t really listen to radio like Baby Boomers because of the abundance of other “music” and information sources. I was blessed to hear and remember Tom when he a was local personality in Chicago. that’s what I remember most. I am happy for Tom’s success but I have never been a “FAN” of radio syndication. It seems that there no one else who has been prepared to step in for Tom and continue the legacy of good radio the TJMS created. Oh yeah, those years of syndication “killed” the chances for another radio personality arise. And one final thought Father Time has NEVER lost a battle.

      • kev ross, so you think the daily mail article is planted? but there were truths in it. TJMS has been cutting things: no more ‘it’s your world ‘ soap, no more miss dupree, no more myraJ. TJM did(stupidly IMO) sell more shares to radio1 so now TJ isnt in control of his own company.

we shall see come jan 2017 when POTUS Obama leaves is TJ does as well.

      • kev ross,
hmmmm i hope you were not swayed by TJMS TJ or radio1 in posting this.

  2. My station WJBT serving Northeast Florida was the third TJMS affliate (after Chicago and Dallas) we followed his lead and the little station that could grew… I understand the impact of syndication but we should not forget how his show grew black radio and had a positive impact on local communities… A lot has happened since the early 90’s one thing that has not changed is my respect for Mr. Joyner without him I could have spent the last 20+ years teaching school or working at Pier One imports… Thanks Tom

    • I have been a fan of Tom for Manny, Manny Manny years. When I was working and had to be at work by 5 am, I would punching and sneak back to my car to listen to the begging of the Tom Joyner’s morning show. Keep the good work up Tom I love and support u.

    • J Anthony Brown very funny guy Tom and J are good together alone with Sybal please don’t break up the team I listen each morning before going to work. Lets put the band back together.

  3. I will no longer be lisening to102.3, Russ Parr plays a lot of Hip Hop and Rap I don’t like that type of music. I like Tom Joyners morning show as is, I’m old school and that’s my type of music he plays. Cathy Hughes needs to rethink her move because she’s going to lose a lot of loyal fans, if she makes him move to 1450 am. I’m glad she brought Donnie Simpson back, but this would be a terrible decision on her part and could cost her Radio One a lot of money.

  4. Who says things needs to get younger or have a younger perspective anyway? There is enough “young” radio outlets to go around! Besides, I enjoy having my old ear entertained by the TJMS every morning.

      • if cathy hughes and tom joyner do not liek one another why do business?
why did radio one buy reach media which is TJ’s radio show and website?

why did TJ sell to Cathy Hughes if he doesnt like her ?

      • you have to love it when people who have no clue want to comment. While I think Radio One makes bad decisions regularly, your assessment of a Tom Takeover during a weekend was and attempt to let people know that tom was still there. Check the morning numbers over the last two years and you will find the answer that you are lookin for. you can’t kick off the day with a morning show that doesn’t evev crack the top ten. Maybe folks should have listened more?

  5. I have listened to the Tom Joyner Morning Show since I moved here to Alabama.. I love the music, I like his commentating, love the way he enter acts with callers and listeners.. He’s a natural!!! The owners should try everything they can to keep the Legacy, Laughter, Commentating and most if all “their knack for Relating to all ages and races, making us laugh during good times and bad”. Keeping us informed, being our unseen FRIEND!! He is more to us then just a RADIO Personality, He’s our FRIEND!!! Seen and Unseen!!!!

  6. I know one thing this is one of the most biggest show on black radio. And I have been a listener for over twenty year and there’s know other morning show that keep there listener inform like this show. My grandmother always said every time something good come along to help our people someone is always trying to find away to brake that up. The show has three people who take pride in there work and without one of them the show will not be the same so with that bring said I do hope that J Anthony Brown will return he is the anchor of this show fun man an is love just like Tom and Sibil is

  7. Tom Joyner is loved all over this industry, always informative in every aspect, has been kicked out of a lotta places (Chicago) more than once, and turned it all around for the betterment of being knowledgeable of it all. Age is the factor here for kicking out of what he loves so much, helping people. How appalling as an excuse for it all.

Tom Joyner, what a class act, I am a senior as well, and have followed Tom Joyner forever, and will continue to do so.

What a pleasure to finally meet you Tom Joyner, face to face, you are and will continue to be loved (Harbor View, and after party.

I never missed a 5am wake up without my Tom Joyner wake up (5am to 9am) Chicago time.

Love my Tom Joyner morning show (Sybil and Jay)

  8. Love J. Anthony Brown and would hate to see him go. If Tom walks after his contract is up, what will become of the family reunion?

  9. The show was moved from 105.3 in Virginia so now I ride in silence in the mornings. I have to wait until I get to work to listen to the show on my computer. Tom, Sybil, and J are the best and make an awesome team. It is ok when they have other comedians fill in, but no one can take the place of J. Anthony Brown. Everything must change, but this team could go on for another 5-10 years. There are so many of us who need and enjoy this type of music. Don;t go now, I am just getting my groove on at 60. Thanks for the memories

  10. These morning shows on Urban radioare not funny Russ Parr , Steve Harvey not funny. They’re trying to take a page out of Howard Stern’s book. 40 yo Profeaaional from The DC metro

  12. What are you doing to make 104.9 better in Lake Charles La. 70601 the D.J. down hear suck never on the air send Miss Blackwell past God RIP its been down Tom Joyner you need to fix this put back the D J back on they play the best music God Bless our radio station

  13. I find this move absolutely ridiculous. I enjoyed listening to TJMS in the morning.
Which is the only time I listen to 95.9 Fm Baltimore.
I now listen to WHUR 96.3, which to me is real radio.
If TJMS is removed so would I

  14. I have been listening to the tjms, for many years I have even started my husband to listening to them we look forward to hearing them every morning please don’t cut the show off love all Sybil, tom, j. They get our day started.

  15. I truly enjoy listening to the TJMS each morning. I agree with a few of the comments. Particularly, the one on old school music. I too, old school. I do no care for nor do I listen to rap. I prefer adult content and Motown, Phila and Ohio old school sounds of the 50s, 60s, 70s and some 80s. I agree with the other comment on “who says a young perspective is needed.” No young person can tell me nothing or put anything into perspective about the world. Their perspective and my perspective is totally different. Until a “young perspective” have experienced everything I have, they cannot tell me anything. I love J. Anthony Brown and Sybil Wilkes along with Damon Williams, Roland, and the remaining TJMS crew who also provide insightful interesting and zany commentary. In short, please do not lose the TJMS. I need to get my laugh on in the morning.

  16. I live in DMV, and I am a major fan of TJMS, have been for 20 years, and will be using the app or listening to him on line at other stations like WHRP or WMGL. Not a fan of Mr Parr (music choices and conversations are a little young for my taste) but clearly there is a major fan base and following,

    Just know this
    1) there is much more to this story than any of us know
    2) money talks and we know what walks
    3) decisions like this tend to be final unless there is a real outcry and someone’s pockets start to feel the impact
Stay tuned—-lets see of TJMS leaves other markets and lets see what the outcome is there

  17. I have been a listener of the TJMS for a very long time. I can remember when they were doing the Sky Shows. Tom Joyner is doing good work. He continues to raise money for scholarships to Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Sometime people would try to fix something that is broken, but as the saying goes….”if ain’t broken, don’t fix it”. The things that Tom is doing, we can see them. What about Real Fathers Real Men, or The Little Known Black History Fact, or even BlackAmerica Web, the site that focuses on Black People.
I say that the thousand of listeners around the country should stand up and let their voices be heard! let’s keep the TJMS show on.

    • I say that the thousand of listeners around the country, we should stand up and let our voices be heard! Let’s keep the TJMS show on the air.

  18. Whatever Tom does will be his decision. Everything changes and we don not know what is going on in his personal life. He does a lot of things for people and deserves to do him now. Health, love and happiness is more important as you mature. I wish him the best as well as the great people surrounding him.

  19. Kathy Hughes would like to be a famous radio/TV host personality but she lacks the talent. Power and envy are dangerous. Tom is a community activists but his show is not for the young audience . Who decided that everything has to be centered around the young. I hope he moves onto xm radio. And all those who plotted against him lose. Wrong may provide short term rewards but is always given its just in the end.

  20. Detroit here…the move to AM was a big mistake. The signal is not as strong in the morning (when TJMS airs) and difficult to pick up at times. I agree, the executives may think a younger perspective is needed, but TJMS appeals to a older demographic. We appreciate the history, political commentary, news and humor! Many Gen X and millennials are listening to streaming services anyway.

I do hope J. Anthony Brown returns…I loved when he “Murdered the Hits”

  21. i love the t j morning show but i do not like the change you made and treat him so mean where no one can listen to him but your 1023 but you know what i am going to listen to my i pod before i listen to you 1023 donna simpson is boring and so is russ parr

  22. I am very disappointed that the Tom Joyner show moved. He was our avenue to Black News and kept the African American community abreast of relevant issues that affect the Black community. I cant stand the replacement, it sucks.

  23. I don’t understand the radio managers anymore first they tell the jocks to talk less then they hire comics
so when you tune in all you hear is a live stupid comic show.
as for syndication it makes no sense .
    you loose the local connection.
I know I was on local radio in Bermuda for 30 years over here they do something different if you speak well they
don’t hire you but if you are a night club disc jockey and can’t speak properly they hire you
