Cumulus Brands New Urban Radio Station in New York, Radio 103.9

This is quite interesting. WBLS will finally have competition with a new Urban AC station that will premiere in New York in July, Radio 103.9. Tom Joyner will offer another effort at doing mornings in the Number One market and DL Hughly will be syndicated in afternoons. Sharon “laLocaMonterro will move from Orlando to do middays and Marc Clarke will be added from DC to do evenings with a show called “Hanging Downtown.” The Daily News has reported that there have been complaints that community voices are rarely heard on commercial broadcast radio and Cumulus is promising the new station will address that. The new format premiered at Sylvia’s in Harlem last night. (picture credit New York Daily News)

From an industry perspective, this helps Tom Joyner and Radio One’s Reach Media get the added advertising revenue advantage for both shows in the top market via Cumulus who we have heard has surrendered all urban programming after Michael Baisden left. Talk about leaving an impression.  Best of luck.

  1. I understand Tom Joyner in morning but I would have gone local/live for afternoon drive..New York is such different market. Another option would have been negotiating a deal w/Baisden & a good producer knowledgeable about NY radio programming thus tailoring the show the Tri- State area.
