Classic Hip Hop and 90’s R&B is really making a comeback via radio. When you look at KDAY in Los Angeles and SOUL 106.3 in Chicago, who just added an evening classic hip hop show, it goes to show you that the trend is picking up steam and maybe the 90’s were the golden era for hip hop at least.
We can officially add another station to the bunch. iHeartMedia/Minneapolis debuted “Hot 102-5,” the new home of Classic Hip Hop and R&B for listeners in the Twin Cities area. Hot 102-5 kicked off with 5000 songs in a row, commercial-free, featuring artists such as Jay-Z, 2Pac and Notorious B.I.G.
Co-owned KDWB afternoon host Lucas Phelan has expanded his duties to become Hot 102-5’s Program Director. “Hot 102-5 will be Minneapolis’ new home for classic hip hop and R&B — this is a completely unserved audience and we can’t wait to introduce the new station to millions of listeners” said iHeartMedia/Minneapolis Senior VP/Programming for Gregg Swedberg. “We’re all about the music on Hot 102.5, and we’re going to start by playing a ton of it,” said Phelan. “I’m excited to introduce this new format to Minneapolis listeners, it’s what they have been asking for.”
