Black Male Empowerment Summit & Positive Impact Expo
Theme: B.I.G (Brothers Influencing Greatness)
Montgomery, Alabama July 27, 2013
“Am I my brother’s keeper” Genesis 4:9
Montgomery’s crime rate is at an all time high and has created a negative impression for our city. 78% of the homicide victims in 2013 in Montgomery were black males under the age of 25 and more than 90% of these crimes were committed by other black males also under the age of 25 destroying two generations of black men. How do we as a community change that, by first accepting the responsibility that we must do more and then by creating opportunities to positively impact the lives of this demographic in peril.
We have a simple mission to influence “greatness” amongst the black males of our community. As natives and residents of Montgomery, we can’t afford to sit back and watch Montgomery’s crime rate increase while support, interest & love for our city decrease. Many young people especially our black male youth see Montgomery, Alabama as a place that is hopeless with very limited opportunity. Our responsibility as people who have been afforded opportunities in life is to pay it forward and redefine that perspective for them. Project H.O.P.E “Helping Our People Evolve” will encourage growth and development by investing in the future of our youth by showing them tangible reasons why they should develop pride in themselves and their city, enhance their leadership skills, exercise their competitive spirit and interest in the community in which they live, while honoring the achievement of those currently making a difference.
Team H.O.P.E is a collective group of successful Black Men in the River Region concerned about redefining the odds. The expo & summit is our best effort to bridge the gap by lending a “day of service” to our community by showing our best self. The expo will be produced by highly qualified professionals in their perspective fields of expertise. We have a list of impressive verbal commitments right now from many successful individuals, organizations, civic & social groups, colleges & universities who all reside in the River Region. The committee team consists of Perry Varner creative director of MOCA Magazine, ASU head football coach Reggie Barlow, Judge Steven Reed, Lobbyist Greg Jones, Terrence Baldwin of Souled Out Music Group, Willie Durham of State Farm Agency, Chris Thomas of InMontgomery Media Group, Paul Davis of Davis Entertainment and a host of other black male city officials, politicians, businessmen, tastemakers as well as many ASU Alumni, AUM Alumni, Troy Alumni, fraternity members and churches. We will personally see that this is not a money making effort for anyone involved. All participation, talent, speakers, sponsorships, donations, services and products will be donated, in-kind services and used solely to adhere to the quality of this event for our community and especially our youth. Our goal is to act as a cohesive unit in addressing the social needs of our young people by being positive, proactive vocal resolutions to the many problems and challenges they face. The “empowerment factor” of showing impressionable youth of the African Diaspora a range of successful people, career options, interest, and life enhancing opportunities that exist in Montgomery & the River Region will prove beneficial in their overall development. More than 250 exhibits dedicated to relieving the feeling of hopelessness that currently exists amongst this demographic by offering a day of positive impact activities. We will create a full day expo and empowerment summit using our connections to entertainment, media, press, motivational speakers, spiritual leaders, business community and celebrities.
