Johnson merges the worlds of politics and popular culture
Reach Media’s nationally syndicated radio personality Tom Joyner today named Jeff Johnson the first finalist selected to advance to the second round in the Tom Joyner Morning Show (TJMS) national search for the next Commentator.
“I am humbled and excited that Tom Joyner and listeners selected me to participate in the next round,” Jeff Johnson said. “To be chosen at this time in our nation’s history to provide commentary on issues facing our community is indeed an honor,” he stated.
TJMS “a party with a purpose” began the eight week-long contest featuring up and coming leaders in the African American academic, news and entertainment community. TJMS previous resident commentator, Tavis Smiley announced early this year his plans to leave the program after 12 years, to concentrate on other projects.
Not a popularity contest, the TJMS next Commentator search is based on listeners rating the finalists’ on-air commentaries in various categories including style, delivery and the ability to inform, engage and empower more than 8 million listeners in 115 markets. During July, the remaining six finalists will continue their on-air auditions, each Tuesday and Thursday at 8:10am ET. The search then will be narrowed down to four. The final two will be chosen and compete to become the new weekly TJMS commentator.
“Both Tom & Tavis have opened the door for voices, such as mine, to impact our community on various social, political and cultural issues of the day and I look forward to the competition in the coming weeks,” stated Johnson.
The Tom Joyner Show airs weekdays from 5:00 am to 9:00 am EST in 115 markets. It is also available live at BlackAmericaWeb.com.
