Alliance for Women in Media Foundation Welcomes Michael Powell as New Honorary Trustee

March 7, 2012 (McLean, VA) ““ The Alliance for Foundation  is pleased to announce its newest Honorary Trustee, Michael Powell, President & CEO of the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA). As CEO for NCTA, Powell serves as the cable industry’s leading advocate, spokesman, and representative in its relationship with the U.S. Congress, the Administration, the FCC, and other federal agencies.

Michael K. Powell, former Chairman of the (FCC) from 2001 to 2005 and a member of the FCC for eight years, began his tenure as President & CEO of NCTA on April 25, 2011. Powell was nominated as a member of the FCC by President Bill Clinton and was designated by President George W. Bush as FCC Chairman in January 2001, serving in that role until April 2005. During Powell’s tenure at the FCC, the Commission oversaw tremendous change and marketplace growth in the telecommunications sector. Powell worked to bring FCC regulations into the 21st Century and to recognize the move of voice, video, and data technologies away from limited analog platforms to powerful digital applications that bring more value to the public. He focused on initiatives to encourage market-driven solutions that promote consumer interests. He also supported new methods of deploying advanced services through technologies that would expand affordable broadband options to all Americans regardless of their geography.

“AWM is doing critical work on behalf of women in a wide range of media, with strong educational initiatives and important . AWM leaders historically also have been significant contributors to groups that have advised the FCC and other federal agencies,” Powell said. “I’m happy for the opportunity to provide guidance, to help AWM further enhance its ability to serve its members and constituents with vital and relevant programs.”
